Job Summary
The Lead Structured Cabling Technician oversees the installation, termination, testing, and documentation of structured cabling systems for large scale commercial and data center projects. This role combines advanced technical expertise with field leadership responsibilities. The technician leads installation crews, coordinates with project managers and other trades, and ensures all cabling infrastructure is installed according to industry standards and project specifications. Responsibilities include installing and supporting copper and fiber infrastructure, building out telecommunications rooms, performing testing and troubleshooting, managing materials on site, and mentoring junior technicians. The role requires strong leadership, technical knowledge of structured cabling systems, and the ability to maintain quality, safety, and project timelines in fast paced construction environments.

Job Responsibilities



  • Lead and supervise structured cabling crews on commercial voice and data cabling projects
  • Install, route, and support structured cabling systems including CAT5e, CAT6, and fiber optic infrastructure
  • Install cable pathways including J hooks, D rings, cable trays, ladder racks, and conduit pathways
  • Pull, route, dress, and label cables in telecommunications rooms, ceilings, and outlet locations
  • Terminate copper and fiber cabling at patch panels, jacks, racks, and modular plugs
  • Build and organize telecommunications rooms including racks, ladder racks, backboards, patch panels, and cable management systems
  • Install and mount wireless access points, network switches, and fiber network equipment
  • Perform fiber splicing, testing, and troubleshooting using cable testing and fiber testing equipment
  • Conduct cable testing and certification to ensure installations meet industry standards
  • Read and interpret blueprints, floor plans, and installation specifications to guide installation work
  • Perform quality checks on cable runs, terminations, labeling, and equipment installation
  • Troubleshoot cabling issues including signal failures, labeling discrepancies, and pathway conflicts
  • Coordinate daily activities with project managers, general contractors, and other trades on job sites
  • Conduct safety meetings and ensure compliance with job site safety standards and OSHA guidelines
  • Manage materials and inventory on site and request additional supplies as needed
  • Document completed work including labeling, testing results, and project documentation
  • Train and mentor junior technicians on installation techniques and structured cabling standards
  • Maintain clean, organized, and safe work areas throughout project completion


Job Requirements



  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • 3 to 5 years of structured cabling or low voltage installation experience in commercial environments
  • 2 to 3 years of experience leading crews or supervising technicians on structured cabling projects
  • Strong knowledge of structured cabling installation practices and industry standards including TIA and BICSI guidelines
  • Experience installing copper and fiber cabling systems including termination and testing
  • Experience building telecommunications rooms including racks, ladder racks, patch panels, and cable management systems
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, floor plans, and technical installation documents
  • Experience coordinating with general contractors and other trades on construction sites
  • Strong troubleshooting, communication, and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of job site safety practices and OSHA compliance


Work Experience



  • Experience installing CAT5e, CAT6, and fiber cabling infrastructure
  • Experience leading installation crews on commercial structured cabling or low voltage projects
  • Experience performing cable testing, troubleshooting, and certification
  • Experience completing project documentation including labeling, daily reporting, and as built updates
  • Experience managing materials and inventory on active construction job sites
  • Experience working on large scale commercial construction projects or data center builds
