Job Summary The Lead Structured Cabling Technician is responsible for overseeing and executing complex fiber optic and structured cabling installations for large-scale commercial and data center environments. This role combines advanced technical expertise in fiber installation, splicing, and testing with leadership responsibilities, including supervising crews, coordinating project activities, and ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards. The position requires a hands-on leader who can manage field operations, interpret technical documentation, and maintain high-performance project execution. Job Responsibilities
Install structured cabling systems, including fiber rough-in, cable routing, dressing, and labeling
Perform fiber and cable termination, including single-mode and multi-mode fiber connections (ST, LC, SC, SC-APC)
Conduct fusion and ribbon splicing using appropriate equipment
Perform testing and troubleshooting using Fluke testers and OTDR equipment
Install and build out server racks, rack elevations, fiber trays, ladder racks, cabinets, and related infrastructure
Execute Outside Plant (OSP) fiber installations into data center environments
Read and interpret blueprints, specifications, and project documentation
Perform quality control checks to ensure all installations meet required standards
Receive, organize, and assemble materials and hardware
Maintain clear and professional communication with team members and project stakeholders
Follow all safety protocols, including proper use of PPE and adherence to OSHA standards
Lead daily team activities, including task assignments and productivity tracking
Conduct daily safety meetings and stretch and flex sessions
Perform jobsite inspections to ensure safety, quality, and production standards are met
Address unsafe practices or installation errors immediately
Lead end-of-day reviews to assess progress, identify issues, and plan next steps
Coordinate with project leadership regarding updates, challenges, and change orders
Manage relationships with contractors and clients
Forecast labor needs and coordinate material requirements
Job Requirements
High school diploma or GED
Minimum 5 years of experience in data center or structured cabling environments
Minimum 5 years of fiber installation experience, including splicing and testing
Experience leading teams of 8-10 or more technicians
Demonstrated ability to interpret blueprints, specifications, and technical documents
Knowledge of fiber standards and universal communications color codes
Proficiency with fiber testing equipment and installation tools
Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications and project coordination tools
Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
Ability to meet driving requirements, if applicable
Physical ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and lift up to 50 pounds (moving up to 75 pounds as needed)
Ability to stand and work for extended periods
