GENERAL SUMMARY:

Works with minimal supervision to independently perform a variety of high-level work activities including coordinating all phases of equipment maintenance and new equipment installations of medical equipment involved in the treatment, care, diagnosis and monitoring of patients. Utilizes a background with a strong emphasis on medical and non-medical software applications. Takes a lead role in the inspection, installation and ongoing service of assigned medical systems. Supports complex hardware and software medical systems including diagnostic radiology devices, cardiac systems and other complex patient monitoring systems. Implements and supports medical device integration with clinical information systems. Works closely with clinical departments to conduct per-purchase evaluations of equipment; advises on appropriate purchases and leads or co-leads the implementation process. Serves a project coordinator for special biomedical projects as assigned.

PRINCIPAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. *Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

2. *Provides direction and information on biomedical electronics repair and maintenance to Biomedical Electronics Technician I & II staff.

3. *Coordinates a team of co-workers to accomplish medical center wide biomedical projects, ensuring on time, effective implementation of new equipment, training and post-installation troubleshooting.

4. *Installs and configures medical and non-medical software applications.

5. *Performs all aspects of biomedical electronic equipment maintenance, troubleshooting and repair.

6. Assists in the management of the medical equipment database and inventory.

7. May be assigned to modify equipment to meet customer needs.

8. *Maintains, administers and updates specialized hardware and software systems; maintains accurate project -related documentation.

9. *Serves as a special project leader on Medical Center wide projects in order to ensure that medical equipment system implementation is effective; trains clinical staff in the proper operation of medical equipment systems; provides support to clinical staff to troubleshoot problems.

10. *Works closely with clinical departments to conduct pre-purchase evaluations of equipment and advises on appropriate purchases.

11. May participate in the Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) team to support patients, order equipment and supplies and provide input during the patient selection process.

12. Provides ongoing support to staff to minimize equipment down time and reduce user errors.

13. *Safety tests equipment and Medical Center's structural environment to ensure patient and staff safety from electrical and mechanical hazards.

14. *Evaluates electronic equipment maintenance history and recommends service options to provide the most cost effective solutions while maintaining the required regulatory compliance, quality, safety and minimum amount of equipment down time.

15. Attends training classes to expand and maintain a high proficiency level on assigned equipment and systems; advances work knowledge by participating in continuing education inservices, reading periodicals/literature and seeking ongoing development opportunities.

16. Demonstrates and explains correct operation of specified electronic equipment to medical personnel; communicates knowledge of equipment and systems as requested by coworkers and customers.

17. *Complies with established safety policies and procedures at all times; informs appropriate personnel of any detected safety hazards.

18. Enters restricted access areas, without supervision, to perform assigned work.

19. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops, and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.

20. Participates in meetings, committees and department projects as assigned.

21. Performs other related projects and duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

1. Knowledge of electrical and mechanical safety precautions and intervention techniques.

2. Knowledge of customer service philosophies and practices.

3. Knowledge of medical electronics principles and theory required to troubleshoot failed electronic equipment to the component level.

4. Knowledge of specialized cardiac systems and/or diagnostic radiology imaging systems.

5. Knowledge of medical device integration practices, including HL7 code.

6. Knowledge of IP network design, PC configurations and MS Windows workstations and servers.

7. Knowledge of manufacturer's manuals, troubleshooting techniques and preventative maintenance schedules to repair, calibrate and maintain medical equipment.

8. Skill in the operation and maintenance of power tools, hand tools and measuring devices.

9. Skill in reasoning in order to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations with limited documentation.

10. Ability to coordinate the sequence and time parameters of a biomedical project based on the complexity and scope of the software/device.

11. Ability to function in a sterilized environment if necessary.

12. Ability to provide direction and support to coworkers in order to meet customer needs and service timelines.

13. Ability to read, interpret and analyze schematics and wiring diagrams.

14. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic or schedule form.

15. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

16. Ability to perform crucial conversations with desired outcomes.

17. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of personnel and medical staff.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Associates degree in Electronics or Biomedical Electronics or equivalency required. Minimum of five (5) years full time electronics experience in the medical equipment service field required. Active Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET) or Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist (CRES) strongly preferred. Certification by multiple original equipment manufacturers to repair medical equipment preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

(Physical Requirements are based on federal criteria and assigned by Human Resources upon review of the Principal Job Functions.)

(DOT) - Characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or a greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

May work in an on-call capacity and be required to work holidays, weekends, evenings/nights and overtime as work situations indicate or require.
