Job Summary

The Machinist is responsible for producing precision machined parts by operating manual machining equipment and interpreting blueprints and technical drawings. This role supports manufacturing operations by building production parts, troubleshooting tooling issues, and ensuring all components meet required tolerances and quality standards in an ITAR-controlled manufacturing environment.


Job Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints and sketches to produce parts to specification
  • Operate manual machining equipment including lathe, Bridgeport mill, and drill press
  • Perform machine setups, adjustments, and moderate maintenance on equipment
  • Operate manual lathe equipment to produce precision components (manual lathe experience required)
  • Troubleshoot fixture, tooling, and equipment issues in manufacturing areas
  • Maintain proper coolant and lubrication levels on machines
  • Inspect parts using gauges and measurement tools to ensure tolerance compliance
  • Perform riveting, de-riveting, and insulation installation/removal as needed
  • Support production operations and collaborate with shop personnel
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities including daily 5S
  • Assist in training and supporting new employees


Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 5 years of manufacturing experience required
  • Manual lathe experience required
  • Strong blueprint reading skills, including GD&T
  • Working knowledge of machining principles including feeds, speeds, and cutting tools
  • Understanding of heat treating and metallurgical principles
  • Knowledge of steel types and appropriate material selection for applications
  • Understanding of Statistical Process Control (SPC)
  • Ability to lift up to 35 lbs on a regular basis
  • Must be a U.S. Person under ITAR regulations (U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident, Refugee, or Asylee)
  • Must reside within 50 miles of Beltsville, MD (no relocation offered)


Preferred Qualifications

  • Tool and die experience
  • Custom fabrication experience
  • Broader machining experience across multiple machine types


Work Environment

  • Manufacturing shop floor environment
  • Frequent interaction with cutting and assembly machinery
  • Exposure to noise, dust, and machining fluids
  • Requires standing and hands-on mechanical work for extended periods
  • Physical activity including lifting, walking, and equipment operation
  • ITAR-regulated facility requiring compliance with export control requirements
