Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced technician to work on the County's Emergency Response Power Team (ERP). If you have this expertise in installing, maintaining, and repairing emergency power equipment and devices and want to work in a dynamic and supportive environment, we encourage you to apply!

The ideal candidate will have a proven work history demonstrating knowledge, skill, and ability in the ability to diagnose and repair system problems.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Responding to emergency calls related to power issues and uninterruptible power systems; functioning as a subject matter expert on the critical power needs of specific 24x7x365 systems unique to Emergency and Correctional Services within the County.
  • Connecting existing equipment, telecom, and network systems to auxiliary power in emergency situations.
  • Diagnosing and overseeing repair and maintenance of complex electrical systems and will complete some repairs directly.
  • Set-up and maintenance of both mounted and portable generators to provide critical emergency power as needed throughout the County.
  • Inspecting and coordinating equipment shutdowns and exercises.
  • Managing and coordinating the VDOT traffic signal program within the County.
  • Conducting periodic mechanical systems inspections in critical County facilities.
Must provide superior customer service at all times. Hiring salary is commensurate with experience.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent with specialized training in a maintenance/trade area related to the position and three (3) years of related work experience in maintenance/trades area related to the position, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Directly-related experience installing and maintaining commercial mechanical systems, devices, and equipment.
  • Electrician Tradesman License at the Journeyman or Master Tradesman level.
  • Proficiency in Building Automation Systems and MS Office products.
  • Specialized training in Emergency Power equipment and devices.
  • Knowledge of generator-based electrical power and overall generator mechanics.

Job Contingencies and Special Requirements

  • This position requires criminal, credit, and DMV background checks, including Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) fingerprinting.
  • A valid driver's license and good driving record are required (Driving records may be reviewed annually for continued qualification).
  • Hold or obtain CFC license (Universal Refrigerant Recovery) and forklift license within six (6) months of hire.
  • Must be able to exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must be available to respond to County emergencies (24/7) as directed in accordance with Department policy and written or verbal directive.
  • Complete requirements for EVOC training within six (6) months of hire.
  • On-call response to out-of-hours emergency and priority work requests is required on a rotating basis, typically one week on call intervals approximately every six (6) weeks.
  • The successful candidate is subject to recall or being held beyond scheduled workday.
  • This position is considered "Essential" and requires Arc Flash Safety Training (OSHA) within one year of hire.
