MANUFACTURING ENGINEER 1 (SAFETY FOCUS) POSITION SUMMARY
- Parker Exotic Metals Forming Division (EMFD) is launching a newly formed team within EMFD focused exclusively on improving safety across production environments.
- This team will include mechanical engineers, controls engineers, and maintenance mechanics working together to identify, prioritize, and mitigate hazards for production.
- The team's mission is to reduce and control higher-risk elements within the production environment. Success will be measured by the reduction of a Risk-Severity Index for each site.
- The team will evaluate and rate hazards then execute effective solutions on aggressive timelines.
IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILE
- We are looking for manufacturing engineers with strong mechanical aptitude, hands-on problem-solving ability, and a high level of ownership. The right candidate will have an entrepreneurial mindset and be comfortable moving quickly from problem identification to practical solution implementation.
- Ideal candidates should have at least 2 years of manufacturing engineering experience, with demonstrated ability to design and draft moderately complex tools, machines, fixtures, guarding improvements.
- The candidate should be capable of working independently, while also collaborating closely with others across the division and provide divisional leadership on more complex projects.
- This role is best suited for someone who enjoys working directly with equipment and tooling, has strong troubleshooting skills, and is comfortable being hands-on - building, modifying, fixing, testing, and improving mechanical systems in a production environment.
KEY ATTRIBUTES The ideal candidate for this position will have:
- Work experience analyzing machines, tools, and production processes to identify hazards, weaknesses, and improvement opportunities.
- Develop practical concepts and select the right path forward based on safety impact, feasibility, timing, while increasing production performance.
- Manage multiple projects independently, ranging from quick-turn improvements to longer-term capital projects.
- Prioritize their own projects to maintain their committed closure dates.
- Communicate effectively with operators, supervisors, managers, suppliers, and contractors.
- Balance attention to detail with the ability to move projects forward without becoming paralyzed by analysis.
- Create workarounds or alternative solutions when project roadblocks arise.
- Demonstrate strong ownership, urgency, creativity, and follow-through
RESPONSIBILITES:
- A typical day in this role may include reviewing active project status, supporting teammates with ideas or troubleshooting, brainstorming mechanical or control-related solutions, and working directly with production personnel to understand safety concerns and process issues.
- The engineer will be responsible for developing project plans that range from one-day fixes to year-long initiatives, obtaining quotes, evaluating vendor solutions, comparing competing technical options, creating purchase requisitions, and justifying capital equipment investments to divisional leadership.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:
- Manufacturing environment experience.
- Experience with tooling, jigs & fixtures, guarding, machines, and operator aids.
- Working experience with troubleshooting equipment.
- Hands-on fabrication, modification, or repair experience.
- Project management experience.
- Working experience with safety improvements in a manufacturing environment.
- Vendor evaluation and coordination experience.
- Project justification.
- Strong cross-functional communication.
IDEAL CANDDIATE
- The strongest candidates will be self-driven engineers who naturally take ownership of problems, enjoy hands-on work.
- The candidate must be able to translate an operator's description and/or requested fix into a well characterized problem that has simple, practical engineering solutions.
- The candidate should be comfortable working in a fast-paced manufacturing environment where safety, speed, creativity, and sound technical judgment are all critical.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education requirement: Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related Engineering field.
- Years of experience: 2-5 years of experience
- Proficient/Working knowledge and ability to apply concepts of engineering for one solution line
- Ability to apply a systematic, disciplined, and analytical approach to problem solving of moderate to difficult scope and complexity
- Demonstrated experience scoping, planning, and implementing capital or significant process change projects, including coordination of cross-functional teams from concept through start-up and handover.
- Effectively apply continuous improvement methods to quality and manufacturing functions (e.g. pull systems, process mapping, JIT)
- Proficient/Working knowledge of data structures and database programming
- Ability to work effectively with CAD/CAM systems or other computer aided manufacturing systems, in addition to standard business application software and/ or specialized data analysis tools
- Ability to use existing procedures to solve problems
- Ability to read and understand moderate to complex engineering drawings and specifications
- Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T)
- Ability to research and analyze data effectively and draw valid conclusions
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Well-organized, detail-oriented, and ability to multi-task
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Outlook, and web-browsers
