| Primary Purpose of the Organization: |
The Office of External Affairs and Military Relations serves as an advocate and the primary liaison between Fayetteville State University and the communities in which it resides on a wide variety of local, regional, state, and federal issues. The office serves as the principal liaison and the point of contact between the university and all levels of community agencies, organizations, and government. The office also acts as a liaison to the University of North Carolina System's State and Federal Relations Offices in monitoring legislation relative to higher education, working with legislators and their staff to influence public policy, and helping to increase awareness of the university's educational outreach and research programs. |
| Primary Purpose of the Position: |
The Associate Vice Chancellor for External Affairs plays a crucial role in facilitating and providing guidance to various organizational initiatives related to communications, public involvement, education, and community relations projects. This position is responsible for building community awareness and support for Fayetteville State University (
FSU) and its programs throughout the region. Reporting to and receiving assignments from the Vice Chancellor for External Affairs & Military Relations, the Associate Vice Chancellor serves as a key advisor in interactions with the university's public stakeholders to achieve the objectives of the university. |
| Minimum Education And Experience Requirements: |
- A master's degree in political science, public relations, public administration, higher education administration, or a related field.
- 5 - 7 years' experience in external affairs, community relations, public advocacy, or a related field, preferably in a higher education setting.
- Familiarity with higher education policies, trends, and challenges, particularly related to external affairs and community engagement.

- Proven ability to develop and implement strategic initiatives that enhance an organization's reputation and foster community support.
- Strong knowledge of local, regional, state, and federal government processes, policies, and legislative frameworks.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills, with the ability to effectively engage with diverse stakeholders and build consensus.
- Demonstrated experience in public speaking, representing an organization at public events, and advocating for legislative priorities.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify emerging issues, assess their impact, and develop appropriate strategies.
- Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of individuals and departments within a complex organizational structure.
- Familiarity with higher education policies, trends, and challenges, particularly related to external affairs and community engagement.
