Summary:


UNC Hospitals Department of Pharmacy has an immediate opening for a highly motivated Pharmacy Technician interested in joining the newly established Advanced Clinical Therapeutics Program.
The successful Pharmacy Access & Solutions Technician will play an integral role in supporting patients receiving advanced and complex specialty therapeutics across UNC Hospitals. This innovative program provides centralized support for patients prescribed high-cost specialty medications and biologics. The technician will help facilitate timely access to therapy, reduce barriers to care, and support coordination across multiple care settings.
Working under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist, the Pharmacy Access & Solutions Technician will serve as a key member of the interdisciplinary health care team and will collaborate closely with Clinical Pharmacist Practitioners (CPPs), physicians, nurses, specialty pharmacy teams, infusion services, manufacturers, and payers. The technician will support benefits investigations, prior authorizations, appeals, financial assistance programs, patient onboarding, and medication access coordination activities.
Within this innovative care model, the technician will help patients navigate insurance and financial barriers, coordinate specialty medication initiation and continuation, support communication between patients and care teams, and facilitate efficient medication access workflows. The technician will also contribute to quality improvement initiatives focused on improving patient access, streamlining workflows, and enhancing the patient experience.
Strong organizational, communication, and care coordination skills are essential. Prior experience in ambulatory care, specialty pharmacy, medication access services, prior authorizations, or infusion coordination is preferred. Certification as a Pharmacy Technician and registration with the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy are required in accordance with UNC Health and state requirements.

This position qualifies for our Pharmacy Technician Incentive Program, which includes $5000 in commitment incentives spread over a two-year period. Payment is made after six months, one year, and two years of employment.

Responsibilities:
1. Maintain current knowledge of service line applicable regulations and external support services
2. Proactively identify and analyze opportunities for intervention and seek solutions to customer concerns encountered both inside and outside of the department
3. Utilize internally developed systems, the electronic health record (EPIC) and commercial vendor software to document and track patient eligibility, prescriptions, patient communications and program enrollment
4. Document and communicate findings to the patient, provider and pharmacies per internal operational standards in a timely and professional manner
5. Provide support to develop and utilize processes that improve operational workflow to positively impact patient care and optimize clinical processes.
6. Respond to and resolve pharmacy-related inquiries from members, clients, providers, or pharmacies related to medications. Appropriately triage inquiries to relevant team members when additional expertise is required.
7. Assist in training for new employees and pharmacy learners

Education Requirements:
* HS diploma or equivalent.
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
* Registration with the NC Board of Pharmacy unless enrolled in a PharmD program.
* CPhT from PTCB or ExCPT from NHA unless enrolled in a PharmD program.
* Two years to obtain CPhT from PTCB or ExCPT from NHA if hired as a non -technician with qualified years of experience.
Professional Experience Requirements:
* Two years of pharmacy technician experience required or three years of relevant experience in a related field.
Knowledge/Skills/and Abilities Requirements:

  • Experience with specialty medications, biologics, or advanced therapeutic agents
  • Experience with prior authorizations, appeals, benefits investigation, and financial assistance programs
  • Familiarity with specialty pharmacy and infusion coordination workflows
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary ambulatory care environment
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple complex cases while maintaining attention to detail
