Posting Summary
This is a leadership position within the Department, responsible for achieving clinical, research, and academic programmatic goals while providing oversight of the Section. The Department is responsible for clinical hematopathology services at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, the school's 650-bed tertiary care core teaching hospital in New Brunswick, NJ. The laboratory also supports the recently opened Jack and Sheryl Morris Cancer Center and the Bristol-Myers Squibb Children's Hospital, both of which are connected to the main hospital. The successful candidate will serve as the Section Chief and will be responsible for leadership, communication, and teamwork within the laboratory. This includes accountability for all aspects of clinical oversight in hematopathology, including quality assurance and accreditation, and development of services. In addition, the Section Chief will provide patient care services and will support the Rutgers Health and RWJ Barnabas Health ( RWJBH) mission of providing hope, healing, and the best health care for patients and their families. The Section Chief will provide administrative oversight for the Section under the leadership of the Department Chair and the Vice Chair of Clinical Operations for the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The Section Chief will be a member of the hematopathology team, consulting with clinical staff and participating in tumor boards, as well as actively participating in the educational programs of the Department, including teaching medical students, residents, and clinical fellows. The Section Chief will also be expected to engage in productive research activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Provides administrative oversight of the laboratory subspecialty areas including but not limited to the hematology lab, flow cytometry, hematopathology-related cytogenetics, and hematopathology-related molecular pathology.
  • Collaborates closely with the Division Chief of Clinical Pathology to oversee hematopathology-related quality assurance and specimen processing involving histology and immunohistochemistry labs.
  • Effectively leads the staff towards excellence in the conduct of teaching, research, patient care, administrative services, and community activities.
  • Assists in the communication of the Department's and University's vision and mission to all staff members through personal example and commitment; helps to turn the vision and mission into reality.
  • Asserts own ideas and encourages others to do the same; gains faculty and staff support and commitment; motivates staff to act.
  • Creates an environment conducive to cooperation and trust.
  • Acts professionally and responsibly within and outside the University; contributes to a positive School and University image.

  • Utilizes management review of tests sent to outside reference laboratories to eliminate tests of limited clinical utility and to identify tests that require Hematopathologist approval.
  • Provides clinical and administrative leadership of the division in collaboration with the Chair/Chief of Service
  • Monitors the division's productivity and quality performance in collaboration with the manager and administrative director; acts as feasible to attain established targets and goals
  • Shows ability to delegate duties effectively to section directors or supervisors, within the scope of service of respective sections
  • Establishes quality metrics for division
  • Establishes annual staff physician goals and objectives in collaboration with individual physicians within their division
  • Evaluates the performance of the physicians in the division annually.
  • Establishes remediation plan for underperforming physicians and documents issues with underperforming physicians for review with the Chair
  • Reviews needs of the community for programmatic growth and assists in developing necessary strategies for implementation. This may require:
  • Advising on and participating in recruitment of physicians
  • Advising on needed resources and identification of potential resources
  • Participation in operational strategies
  • Supports the medical education programs and activities of the Division, including but not limited to providing direct supervision of trainees and allied health care professionals for the delivery of inpatient and outpatient services when applicable, participating in the teaching of trainees and allied health care professionals assigned to the division and participating in the postgraduate continuing educational activities of the division
  • Provides vision and development of the research endeavors of the division including the research initiatives by other members of the division
  • Holds divisional meetings regularly and communicates institutional messages to staff promptly.
  • Provides a means for staff physician feedback to the division chief.

Qualifications






Minimum Education and Experience

  • An MD, DO, or MBBS degree is required.
  • Licensed or eligible for licensure to practice medicine in New Jersey.
  • Board certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology OR Clinical Pathology.
  • Board certified by the American Board of Pathology in Hematopathology.
