Position Summary

The Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology seeks a motivated and experienced professional to act as the Shared Lab Research Scientist. The role requires advanced technical expertise, independent judgment, and oversight of resources utilized by multiple faculty, research groups, and students.

The primary responsibility of this position will be the development, implementation, and management of a department-wide shared instrumentation laboratory. Duties will include

  • Establishment and maintenance of standard operating procedures
  • Development of user access and certification programs
  • Training faculty, graduate students, undergraduate students, and other laboratory users
  • Coordinating instrument scheduling and usage
  • Overseeing billing and cost-recovery processes
  • Troubleshooting equipment issues, coordinating maintenance and service contracts
  • Ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory requirements
  • Provide technical guidance on instrumentation use and capabilities
  • Identifying instrument needs for research and teaching
  • Coordination of annual users meeting to encourage and enhance collaboration
  • Generate income for the Shared lab via grants and user outreach
  • Support instructional activities through laboratory preparation, technical support, and operational oversight for CHEM 422L

Conditions of Employment
  • Successful candidate must submit to a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination and medical history check. Additional health screenings may be required, dependent on the nature of the research conducted, as determined by Employee Occupational Health Services.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Chemistry or related field
  • Technical experience using and troubleshooting variety of scientific instrumentation
  • Ability to write technical standard operating procedures
  • Ability to work independently; adaptability
  • Collaborative mindset to allow success while working with faculty, staff, graduate students, undergraduate students, and post doctoral fellows
