Large Animal Surgery/Equine Sports Medicine Internship

The Veterinary Population Medicine Department will have one sports medicine internship position available from June 7, 2027, to June 16, 2028. The position will have an equine lameness emphasis, and will be particularly suitable for individuals wishing to prepare for admission to a surgery, sports medicine or ABVP residency. The intern will have the opportunity to gain experience in lameness, surgery, rehabilitation, and imaging. The intern will rotate through specialty rotations related to sports medicine and may also choose elective rotation(s) based upon personal goals, clinical coverage needs and advisor approval. The successful intern will work under the supervision of board-certified faculty members and will be responsible for:

1) Participating in the daily activities of the equine lameness and emergency services of the hospital; this includes surgical cases on food and fiber species (particularly camelids, dairy cattle and small ruminants).
2) Assisting in the instruction and supervision of senior veterinary students on clinical service.
3) Assisting in the instruction and supervision of veterinary students in laboratory courses.
4) Interns and residents share after-hours emergency care for the large animal hospital. The intern will have approximately 50% on-call duty and will always have resident and senior clinician backup. Staff members are available for consultations and assistance. Large Animal interns are expected to be available by pager and to live close to the Veterinary Medical Center.

The Minnesota Board of Veterinary Medicine requires all interns to become licensed and accredited in the state of Minnesota. The open book exam will occur after you begin your appointment and a self-study book will be provided prior to the start date. Interns are eligible for 10 days of personal leave time during the course of the internship program. If this personal leave time is not utilized prior to completion of the internship program, all unused time is forfeited. Interns will have FICA, state and federal income taxes withheld.

The Veterinary Population Medicine (VPM) department specializes in population and individual animal medicine focusing on large animals' health and production, biomedical science, and ecosystem and public health. Our faculty members conduct animal and public-health-focused research to better diagnose, treat, and prevent animal disease, as well as diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans. Faculty provide clinical instruction in medicine, diseases, surgery, production medicine, public health and reproduction of domestic large-animal species and are home to faculty in clinics, epidemiology, veterinary public health, and pathology. Faculty members provide clinical services for animals, diagnostic services to animal owners, and continuing education and extension programs for veterinarians and animal owners.

Teaching
The Veterinary Population Medicine Department provides clinical instruction in medicine, surgery, production medicine, diagnostics and reproduction of domestic large-animal species and is home to faculty in epidemiology, veterinary public health, and pathology. The department provides residency training in large animal medicine, surgery, pathology, and veterinary public health and preventive veterinary medicine and works with students in the Veterinary Sciences, and Comparative and Molecular Biosciences graduate programs.

Research
Faculty members conduct animal and public-health-focused research to better diagnose, treat, eliminate and prevent animal disease, as well as diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans.

Service
Faculty members provide clinical services for animals in the Leatherdale Equine Center and Large Animal Hospital, as well as diagnostic services to animal owners through the Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. They consult with producers and veterinarians in the community, provide continuing education and extension programs for veterinarians and animal owners, and play an active role in the Center for Animal Health and Food Safety, John Fetrow Dairy Education Center, Equine Center, and the Swine Disease Eradication Center.

Pay Rate: $42,000 annually
