Job Summary

Civil Rights Investigator investigates discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct allegations filed with the Office of Civil Rights Compliance and Accessibility (CRCA) as well as those filed with external agencies. Works with units across the University to respond to, investigate, remediate, and educate regarding Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, ADA, and Section 504.

  • Investigates discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct allegations involving faculty, staff, and students. Investigation includes but is not limited to: Analyzing complaints to identify allegations and relevant witnesses; Interviewing parties and witnesses; Gathering relevant documentation and evidence; Drafting detailed investigative reports that summarize evidence gathered, analyze evidence gathered and apply evidence to relevant regulation and policy; and Explaining and Participating in University grievance proceedings.
  • Provides advice and guidance to students, faculty, and staff on issues of discrimination, harassment, and sexual misconduct. Maintains collaborative relationships with academic and administrative units, human resources personnel, legal counsel, and external entities to ensure effective and timely efforts to address issues of civil rights compliance.
  • Responds to external agencies, including providing assistance with the drafting position statements and providing requested data.
  • Maintains knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations related to higher education, labor and employment, Title VI, Title VII, Title IX, VAWA, Clery Act, Sections 504, and ADA. Maintains high-level of professional acumen through on-going training and professional development. Implements best practices as they relate to investigations.
  • May supervise assigned staff, students and interns for project based activities as needed.
  • Ensures investigative files are well-documented throughout the investigative process. Maintains accurate and thorough records and notes documenting events within the investigatory process.
  • Assists in development and implementation of training programs for faculty, staff and students.
  • Provides periodic and timely updates regarding the status of complaints received and investigations in progress to leadership and other parties.
  • Collaborates with leadership and University partners to identify and address systemic issues and concerns.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of a case management database to organize, manage, and track reported concerns.
  • Upholds the established rights of the parties. Exhibits the highest standards of integrity and respect for parties, witnesses, and stakeholders.
  • Ensures a prompt, fair, and equitable investigation process for all parties and witnesses.
Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and six (6) years of relevant experience or Master's degree and four (4) years relevant experience or JD, PhD, EdD and two (2) years relevant experience.
Desired Qualifications

  • Professional experience conducting civil rights investigations or related investigation experience, such as labor and employment, law enforcement,sexual misconduct or legal investigations.
  • Demonstrated success developing and implementing educational and training programs.
